Buena Park School District’s Special Education Summer Program Inspires Growth

Buena Park School District’s special education students are spending the summer painting, playing outside and socializing thanks to an extended school year services program designed to keep students motivated beyond the regular school year.

The special education summer program, which runs through June 28, helps 70 pre-kindergarten through seventh-grade students hone gross and fine motor skills and improve social skills as they decorate classrooms and play counting games.

Corey School special education pre-k teacher Sara Alan said the program is perfect for providing the District’s special education students with a chance to have fun during the summer while also helping them retain skills learned throughout the school year.

“It’s amazing to see some of my students have breakthroughs with obtaining new speech and social skills and then keeping those improvements,” Alan said. “I have so many non-verbal students and it’s good to see them now talking and learning routines for their day.”
