In addition to some websites and links below, we recommend that you use the Parent School Readiness Toolkits produced by First 5 California to support school readiness. These toolkits are used by districts throughout the county to promote school readiness. Here are the following links to this document.
We have valuable resources from the state regarding developmental milestones as well as research-based child development and parenting information through suggested activities. We have included a School Readiness Activities and Calendar that can be download to use with your child.

Peg + Cat (Ages 3-5)
An animated math-based series that follows Peg and her sidekick Cat as they embark on adventures, solve problems together, and learn foundational math concepts and skills.
The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That (Ages 4-5)
In each program, the Cat in the Hat and his friends Sally and Nick go on a science adventure such as shrinking to bee-size to explore a hive and discover how honey is made; flying with birds to discover how and why they migrate; or diving inside flowers to find out more about the animals that depend on them to live.
Dinosaur Train (Ages 4-5)
This animated series embraces and celebrates the fascination that preschoolers have with both dinosaurs and trains, while encouraging basic scientific thinking skills as children learn about life science, natural history and paleontology. Along with the animated stories, there are short live-action segments hosted by a paleontologist.
Sid the Science Kid (Ages 4-5)
This animated show uses comedy to promote exploration, discovery, and science readiness among preschoolers, and taps into children's natural curiosity about science in everyday life. The energetic and inquisitive Sid starts each episode with a new question like "why are my shoes shrinking?" or "why do bananas get mushy?"
Plum Landing (Ages 6-9)
In this animated series, meet Plum, a video game designer from the desolate Planet Blorb, who longs to experience nature. The Plum Landing curriculum is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and is designed to give kids an understanding of the science underlying healthy ecosystems and sustainability.
WildKratts (Ages 6-8)
Chris and Martin Kratt encounter incredible wild animals, combining science education with fun and adventure, while traveling to animal habitats around the globe. The program can help strengthen basic skills of observation and investigation that children will use increasingly as they continue their study of science.

Print this page and invite kids to color it in, then help them cut it apart and put the steps in order. Post the cards in the correct sequence near the bathroom sink. The next time kids wash their hands, help them try Elmo’s trick: Sing the alphabet song to remember how long to wash!

Early Learning & After School Care
BPSD inspires all students to pursue high achievement; empowering them to follow their passions… including our youngest students & their families.
We believe children learn through authentic, developmentally academic learning experiences and opportunities that expand and build the whole child through all domains of learning. Families are the child’s first teachers, impacting their lifelong growth. We honor families as partners in the child’s learning process.
We work collaboratively with families, professionals, and the First 5-Orange County to provide an array of services that strengthen and enable families to develop skills that build healthy and successful children, ages 0-5, who are learning and ready for school. Goals are accomplished through parent education, provider education, parent and child interactive programs along with health support services.
We offer two Learning Links opportunities in our district. The Learning Links will be offered once a week at both Gilbert and Whitaker school sites. Every Thursday morning from 8:30am to 9:30am, various activities including a story time and Lending Library will be offered to families and their children.
Outreach Preschool Program at Corey
At Corey elementary, we offer a licensed-exempt kindergarten readiness program. This program is only available to children between 4 years old - 4 years, 9 months of age. Enrollment is limited to 12 children in the morning. Each 10 -12-week session runs four (4) days a week for three (3) hours per day.
Inclusion Preschool at Beatty
At Beatty elementary, we offer a limited Inclusion Preschool Program. This program runs four (4) days a week and children need to be 4 years old before September 1 of the current school year. Typically, enrollment begins in the spring and program fills quickly. Enrollment is limited to six (6) students in the morning and six (6) students in the afternoon.
BPSD State Preschool
Our State-Funded Preschool Program, in partnership with Think Together, is a free program for families in our District. Our quality programs are funded by the California Department of Education and is currently enrolled in the Orange County Quality Start program. We have designed our preschool program to invite all children into the world of learning using the California Preschool Learning Foundations as a guide for encouraging growth in all areas – social, emotional, physical, and cognitive. Our goal is to combine a developmental, linguistic, academic, and multicultural approach to learning that will create the building blocks for life-long learning. Our classroom environments meet each child’s unique learning style by offering developmentally and age-appropriate hands-on experiences. We believe that the family provides the child’s most important learning environment. Therefore, we offer education, involvement opportunities and support for the entire child and family.
We believe in providing a developmentally appropriate curriculum using an eclectic approach based upon maturation, developmental theories, including brain development along with research based on growth and development practices. Emergent Curriculum is an approach that is open-ended and responsive to children’s needs and interests. Learning opportunities “emerge” though intentional teaching that is facilitated and documented by quality teaching interactions. The foundation for learning experiences are children’s questions, interests, and observations. This type of curriculum through project work allows the opening to explore areas of interest in detail. By exploring projects of personal interest in great detail, there is an excitement in the learning process. This enthusiasm for knowledge, combined with the ability to experience project work in detail, will foster a predisposition for “life-long” learning. Children meet dual learning and enrichment objectives when they engage in the creative process to explore connections between an art form and another subject area to gain greater understanding in both. They use their creativity, imagination and senses to express their observations, they are able to create ideas and possibilities that begins the process of understanding STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) concepts in their everyday learning experiences.
