BPSD GATE Program

Mission & Goals

  • Target Audience: Designed to meet the needs of children who show a capacity for high levels of thinking and/or scholastic achievement.

  • Objective: To nurture students' unique talents, abilities, and interests, and extend their educational experiences so they can reach their fullest potential.

  • Core Focus:

    • Encourages deep inquiry skills to stimulate creative problem-solving.

    • Builds awareness of choices and helps students develop a realistic understanding of their personal abilities.

    • Offers acceleration and enrichment that goes beyond the core curriculum.

Instructional Approach & Strategies

The program provides an integration of literature, math, social studies, and science in designated classrooms using "depth and complexity" principles. Teachers utilize three primary strategies:

  • Multiple Means of Representation: Offers flexible grouping, additional resources beyond textbooks, and reduced support scaffolding for students who learn quickly.

  • Multiple Means of Action and Expression: Provides students with multiple ways to demonstrate knowledge, varies the pace of instruction, and models superior products.

  • Multiple Means of Engagement: Uses problem-solving activities to motivate students and integrates themes and concepts across different content areas.

Program Models

GATE is delivered through three structures:

  1. Self-Contained GATE Classes: For students in grades 3–5.

  2. GATE Clusters: For students in grades 3–5, where they receive differentiated small-group enrichment and instruction.

  3. Middle School Honors Program: Gives middle school students the opportunity to take honors classes across all subject areas.

Identification Process

  • Testing: All 2nd-grade students are tested automatically (unless opted out by parents). Students in grades 3–7 can also be tested upon request.

  • Timeline Flow: The process flows from testing, to identification, parent notification, and finally a GATE orientation meeting.
