Dual Language Immersion

Dual Language Immersion (DLI) develops bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism in English and a partner language. Students learn to think, read, write, and communicate naturally in two languages by learning academic content (e.g. math, science, history) in English and in the partner language.

Dual Language Immersion offers a comprehensive educational experience that goes beyond simply learning a language. Students in DLI receive the same rigorous instruction based on state standards as their peers in traditional English mainstream classes, but with the added benefit of learning in two languages, such as English and Spanish or English and Korean. Utilizing a balanced approach, instruction is provided in both languages to ensure students develop proficiency in both. This tuition-free, full-day program, offered within our public school system, provides a unique opportunity for children to become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural global citizens. Unlike isolated ESL and transitional bilingual programs, DLI is an additive model, enriching students' linguistic and cultural repertoire by adding a second language without diminishing their first language or cultural identity.
