AAL Long-Term Independent Study FAQ

What is the Academy for Accelerated Learning (AAL)?

AAL is a year-long virtual home study educational program that offers high-quality, flexible learning options for students in grades K-8 with the support of a credentialed teacher.

What is the role of the parent/guardian?

Parents play an important role in their student’s education. Parents act as the student’s learning partner by protecting time to complete work and ensuring a space conducive to engaging in instruction and completing assignments.

Does my student need to attend in person?

No. AAL students do not need to attend in-person classes on a school site. Assignments will be provided and submitted virtually.

How will my student receive instruction?

Synchronous instruction is delivered using web-based or telephonic live instruction between the student and the instructor. To maintain school connectedness, a BPSD staff member will offer support and services and conduct wellness checks, and a teacher supervisor will monitor progress.

How often will students receive synchronous instruction?

Classroom-style, web-based, or telephonic synchronous instruction provided by the teacher of record will vary by grade level:

  • Grades Kindergarten-3rd: Daily synchronous instruction

  • Grades 4-8: Daily live interaction and once-a-week synchronous instruction

How long will it take my student to complete their AAL work each day?

Students will complete online lessons and assignments at their own pace. However, the following is a general guideline of time expectations for students:

  • Kindergarten: 3 hours per day on average

  • 1-8: Four hours per day on average

Will daily attendance be taken?

Attendance will not be taken in the traditional sense. Attendance will depend upon the amount of work completed by the student.

Are there any stipulations for students with IEPs or 504 plans?

Students with active IEPs must hold an IEP meeting to discuss placement in the AAL program. The team must determine that online/independent learning is an appropriate setting for the students. Similarly, students on 504 plans should have a meeting to discuss if online/independent learning best meets their academic needs with the 504 team.

What if my student needs additional support?

A BPSD staff member is responsible for monitoring the progress of all students and will offer regularly scheduled check-in times to review student progress and offer support specific to the student’s needs.

Will the student be able to participate in district activities?

Yes, district and site activities will be offered to AAL students. Our goal is to keep AAL students connected to peers and provide enrichment opportunities.

What if my student is academically advanced?

The AAL program is designed to meet the student’s academic and interests. Assignments can be tailored for the student's advanced academic level.
